Insulation

Insulation

All Snug garden rooms have two layers of insulation;

1. The first layer is installed ‘within’ the floor, walls, and roof structure.

2. The second layer is installed ‘over’ the floor, walls and roof structure (under the plaster and floor boards), the second layer also acts as a vapour barrier and helps prevent cold bridging.

You can find out more about vapour barriers and cold bridging below:

What is Cold bridging?
Cold bridging happens where there is a gap in insulation in the external walls of a building, some times this is unavoidable, this can cause a cold spot on the interior of a wall where warm, moist air can condense (a window is a typical cold spot), condensation can lead to mould problems longer term. Snug garden rooms have MVHR units fitted as standard and two layers of insulation, the secondary layer of insulation in our rooms covers 100% of the floor, walls and ceiling. Snug garden rooms are very thoroughly designed and built to prevent cold bridging, cold spots, condensation and mould.
.

What is a vapour barrier?
Vapour barriers do several jobs. They are always fitted on the interior of walls and ceiling (under the plaster and floor boards). One of the jobs of a vapour barrier is to stop the warm, moisture air within a room from getting ‘into’ the wall structure. Without a vapour barrier there is a risk that the ‘vapour’ within a warm room could get into a wall structure, if it then gets through the insulation it will come into contact with the cold outer surface of the wall and condense, which could, longer term, cause rot within the wall.

A vapour barrier also has a secondary job of stopping draughts from getting in, research indicates that up to 40% of the heat within a building is lost through draughts. The vapour barrier in a Snug garden room forms a continuous envelope which goes under the floor, up the walls and across the ceiling, this is a continuous layer which is very thoroughly sealed. This forms a a very comfortable draught proof room which is cheap to heat and very eco friendly.

Insulation Upgrades

Upgrade One

Within wall insulation

● Upgrade the standard 100mm mineral wool to 90mm PIR.

PIR insulation is one of the most thermally efficient ‘within’ wall insulation materials available today. PIR is nearly twice as thermally efficient as mineral wool insulation of the same thickness

Upgrade Two

Over wall insulation

● Upgrade the standard single layer bubble foil to 19 layer multifoil.

19 layer Multifoil is one of the most thermally efficient ‘over’ wall insulations available and provides at least 2.5 times as much insulation value as single layer bubble foil insulation.

Insulation Packages:

We’ve made the various insulation options into four simple packages for you to choose from.

Our ‘Classic spec’ garden rooms come with the ‘Classic spec’ insulation package as standard.
